What can I say, I love watching, photographing and painting pelicans. They are a theme I return to constantly and in fact you could almost say I stalk them. This lovely fellow really gave me the eye and was not too happy with my presence, but tolerated me wallowing around in the mangroves at Hastings. Awkward and unco-ordinated on land one minute, then so unbelievably graceful the next as they take to the water or more spectacularly, the air.

Constant groomers on land, these pelicans were tolerating my presence as I was sinking into the mud at Hastings. I guess they knew I would be even slower than them if I decided to chase them. I love their striking black and white outfits and they work hard to stay looking good. I think Australian pelicans are the most elegant looking, particularly when on the water or in the air gliding with effortless grace on the thermals.

Can you imagine how hot nights can be in outback South Australia?  Even the cold light of a full moon would provide no respite.  This work was actually inspired by a daytime photo of a lightning strike in this area, and I was captivated by the reflection on the water. I decided on a nighttime scene to enhance the mystery, quiet contemplation and 'other worldliness' of the scene. Everything is out of focus and you lose you sense of perspective.

With the Hot August Night show I wanted to do some sort of guitar form. The idea of a blue guitar form was in my head and the alternate title of Play me” also seemed sort of appropriate. However I used the other title on a small watercolour sketch sothis became “song sung blue” and yes I know it is a guitar but perhaps it is the missing guitar from the original cover shot of Neil playing in one interpretation  Air Guitar
