Justin Crawford’s “WILD” is a surrealist’s look at his role as a father and a husband, and at his wife and children’s connection to country through their Kurnai heritage. Painted between 2007 and 2012, “WILD” will at times endear you to the boy gods Atlas and Odin, and at other times question the themes raised in relation to their Aboriginal ancestors. Over the fifteen paintings featured, Justin explores boyhood, responsibility, belonging and his own place in this world, all the while guiding you from start to finish with the skill of an orchestral composer. At times warm, and at other times shocking “WILD” will stay with you long after you have seen it.

Justin writes: When I paint I record. I record the history of me. All my thouhts, all my influences, all my victories and all my failures are present in my work. I can look at small seemingly unimportant sections of a piece I painted years ago and remember what was on my mind when I was immersed in that brush stroke or that Line. What music was moving me at the moment or what words. If there really is a code hidden within my work and you could decipher it you would essentially be snooping through my diary. That is one of the many wonders of paint for me, the honesty and yet the secrecy.

Schooled in Drouin I have always had a creative calling but as a young teen I fell profoundly in love with modern painting. Initially more in the style of an expressionist I later moved towards surrealism. Having always had a fascination with depicting the human figure I find myself closer to figurative painting as I journey.

My environment and all the people who have rubbed off on me alone the way have their little part to play in the person I am and also my work. However, by far the biggest influence on all things I do is my wife and sons. The bulk of the work is littered with symbols from their indigenous heritage
