Bird in a gilded cage - 2011 (SOLD)
Bird in a gilded cage
Bird in a gilded cage.
I seem to be having a session on working on animal shapes. I have often done bird forms in my seats but this is the first one as a sculpture. As a kid I used to have a budgie, Nan had a canary but as I have got older I sort of dislike the idea of caging thingsespecially refugees! My bird is beautiful in form but she has no room to fly and I like the subtle message that is implicit in it. The gilded cage is implied by the golden ring.. and although there are no barsmy bird is mainly 2-D so she cant react in the third dimension.

beaters in an op shop recently They looked ideal for trees so I made my reading girl to sit against themand what would she be reading but a.cook book. This one went into the art show that accompanied the Warragul Regional college centenary

Moon Crescent
nature girl - 2011 (Recycled)
nature girl
A lot of my work has a theme associated with the natural world and many pieces are quite ambiguous as to what is being said. Is the leaf here dead? Is it a symbol of renewal? Is my girl angry or proud? That part is for you to decide but I like the combination of forms and like most art the message is determined by the viewer..
pose - 2011 (SOLD)
pose
I did this piece for a show called Nowa Nowa Nudes and it is supposed to be a self portrait. I mainly work with recycled material and this was just ideal for this piece. I have posed a version of myself in a life drawing pose( I used to do it and teach it) ... a bit of a stretch and hands on the head with a leg placed to preserve a bit of modesty.. I have never felt comfortable with my body and I always had a paunch. This aspect is reflected in the junk used .I have suggested anatomical features with bits of junk and some of the pieces express my feelings about myself,( a drill in the head cause I can be Boring!) etc etc. My neighbor thinks I have made him too thin.... I dont! but then that might be different perceptions...I dont really expect him to sell... But he can hang around here for a while!

I have just started a series of dancing characters. I am fairly awkward type myself but I do love the grace and beauty of dance movements. This couple have a certain joy and enthusiasm( which I guess is part of any dance.I cant imagine and unenthusiastic dance!) and hopefully they bring part of their joy to the viewer

This is one of a series of Kangaroos I did at the start of the year. I did three sets.. all slightly differnt but 3 pair of kangaroos.
voice of the machine - 2011 (SOLD)
voice of the machine
This started with the lovely form of the bit of junk.I think it is an old gear arrangement for a drill, but I used it as a machine that makes noise. I had done loud previously and maybe that was an influence.. or a his masters voice type of idea. Whatever the start, I am pleased with this composition.

I seem to be having a session on working on animal shapes. I have often done bird forms in my seats but this is the first one as a sculpture. Fashion girl 1 - 2010 (SOLD)
Fashion girl 1
One of three fashion girls I did that yearFashion Girl 1is my first piece using formal fashion photos. I expect to do a series in this manner as I have enjoyed the process and am very happy with the finished result. I have always done drawings of people and life drawing too.I love the form of women( lumps and hair) more than the male form but as long as the pose is interesting there are possibilities.
I have interpreted this pose to reflect my dislike of the concept of throwaway fashion. Hence ,for the clothing ,I have used metal scrap. This seems to create a sort of dissonance with something beautiful, the pose, being made with rubbish yet the spacing and arrangement creates its own form of beauty. Ugly and beautiful interchange!
I guess my fashion girls clothes will last a bit longer than most fashion so that is part of the point!
galloping - 2010 (SOLD)
galloping
I was listening to an old Maddy Prior song called Galloping and it brought to mind the fun to be had with a hobby horse. .A stick ,a couple of wheels and a horses head and all of a sudden a kid is off in their own world of riding , racing, chivalry etc etc. How could I resist.and it had to be a girl because girls and horses are inseparable and I am sure this is where it would start!
hoodies - 2010 (SOLD)
hoodies
one of the few sketch pieces that sold at Pt Fairy
My Space - 2010 (SOLD)
My Space
This piece was for the full play exhibition at Fish Creek. One of the aspects of play that this piece is about is how now we are all connected but disconnected at the same time. Playing a game was not just the game but the personalities involved and interactions. In these days of net games where you can play with someone across the world I feel something is lost.

My characters are connected via junk but are all in their own spaces doing their own things. There are similarities in some but differences between others yet each is in his or her own space which cant be violated!
off the wall - 2010 (SOLD)
off the wall
This is the piece I did for Art Blitz. They give you the title on Friday at 4.00 and you hand it in on saturday at 4.00. The topic was Off the wall and I used the word wall as the basis with a character diving off the top. a character climbing it and a girl bouncing her ball off it. It didn't win but I was happy with my composition. I have since broken it up to a number of parts and made new pieces from them.
Prickly - 2010 (Recycled)

Rough Red - 2010 (SOLD)
Rough Red
I did this piece for the sculpture in the Vinyards exhibition at Inverloch. I was given the circle piece as it was an off-cut from a large pipe. I liked the form and I had done a variety of circle based forms for previous shows. I liked the idea of a shape splitting the pieces in the circle so I made the space then added the red circle form. Considering the outer ring is much rougher than what I usually use .. and the piece is being shown in a winery rough red immediately suggested itself..
Surrender - 2010 (SOLD)
Surrender
We had the art teachers art show coming up at the end of April so I made a number of pieces for it. The theme was "every other colour" as the last show was called "red" This is one called Surrender. This sold at the opening night
I wanted a piece with white in it. I had a sketch in my book of a boy with wings crouching on a window sill so I used that as the starting point.
Is the surrender to his true nature? Is it to the urge to jump and see if the wings work? Or was there another story?
The white is the colour of surrender so the title is appropriate but it is a slightly odd piece.
wobble - 2010 (Withdrawn from Sale)
wobble
I saw this lovely Picasso piece with an acrobat balancing on a ball. I remember trying to do something similar but I dont have a great sense of balance so I never really worked hard enough to get this right. However, I have always appreciated those kids who do work at it and many of my students have shown themselves to be competent at doing this sort of thing.( no thanks to me!)
Bird girl - 2009 (SOLD)
Bird girl
I also made a wild boy but surely a wild girl is more fun( I am a man!). In my market stall I have always given my dogs male names and my bird sculptures female names. This might come from growing up in a culture that calls women birds, chicks etc It might also be maybe a greatly sublimated passion for daisy duck or tweety bird!
I used to do lots of life drawing and I usually draw people if I have the chance and it is interesting showing an emotion just through body language. I have tried to do this with this piece and it amused me that when I was working on it at home where it stood in relation to another piece and created a fairly distinct interaction
dog boy - 2009 (SOLD)
dog boy
It seems we spend most of our lives surrounded by examples of animal headed people. I grew up with Bugs Bunny, Daffy and Donald duck and all their various friends. All of them had attitude too! The idea for the piece came to me almost immediately after we decided on the exhibition title and I didnt really know where it came from initially. As a student I was introduced to the gods of ancient Egypt and Anubis (Anubis is the Egyptian name for a jackal-headed god associated with mummification and the afterlife in Egyptian mythology.). I had also done a fair bit of reading and had been reading about early explorers who described dog headed people and others with their heads in the centre of their bodies. Anyway my dog headed boy comes from making these range of ideas into a more solid form. ( or maybe I am reliving a past life as an egyptian!)
seed - 2009 (SOLD)
seed
This went in the moreland sculpture show called grow.
This piece is appropriate to Grow as it is the beginning of all growth. The seed is usually encompassed by a husk or shell which goes into feeding the growing seed. This shell is made up of nutrients and materials which are basically junk. Our society grows from the detritus of past civilizations and ideas which once were new are now used as food for our growth. I have used junk in the form of the seed case and a growing form for the new seed growth to represent this.
