I was looking at an environmental sculpture on Herring Island , done I think by Andy Golsworthy and it was a stacked beehive form mad of flat pieces of rock. I did like the idea but haven’t got rock like that but I did have lots of tube offcuts which I had kept from my days teaching. I started making the form and I decided to stop at 3 rings on top of each other. It had a dynamism but needed a focus so I repurposed an old gas cylinder and made some joining pieces. The base came together from element in the pile and the solidity of the upright make it a very solid looking piece. It also has a certain science fiction aspect to it and you sort of expect it to hum and send out a death ray any moment. I hope it doesn’t!
