I had a liquid ambar tree that got some rot in it and fell down. The pieces when cut up just sat on the front lawn and reacted with the soil. They "spalted" nicely and I made a few boxes from the timber. It is unusual by itself but I felt it needed a bit of quirkiness by adding legs.
