I did civil engineering for a while ( study not practice) and I did architecture for a while ( study not practice) and I was always fascinated by the structure of things. The arch in history is a real engineering breakthrough and the idea of a keystone ( top stone which locks / wedges it together) to me seems amazing. I use wedges a lot in my wood constructions and this piece is the first piece where I have combined Red-gum with recycled steel. I love the contrast of materials and the fact that it is an arch shape but not really a constructed arch appeals to a sense of unreality which is present in many of my works.
