I saw a sketch of a bird and the artist had let the paint run in such a way that the bird sort of had ties to the ground. I sort of liked the idea but the idea of a bird being free had much more resonance and as I had some small chain around I decided to use that instead and “break the chains”. It feels a much more positive piece.
